Avatar: The Last Airbender

Lately, I have been watching the Nickolodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender.

I have seen it before when I was younger, in middle school, but the show was re-released on Netflix earlier this year so I thought I would check it out again.

The show is about a 12-year old boy named Aang who has the power to bend air into attack and defense moves.

He teams up with a brother and sister duo Katara and Sokka. The two found him frozen in an iceberg which was 100 years old! He then learns that there is a war going on between the different element bender nations and that he is the last hope.

Aang, The Last Airbender has to master all four elements in order to defeat the Fire Lord Ozai and end the war.

I recommend this show to anyone really. It is an all-around easy to watch and follow along show. It has touches of silly human and a good story.

Politics

One thing that I am not really used to talking about is politics.

This year’s Presidential Election is extremely important and I used to not care. I used to not even think about voting and I didn’t even care about politics.

Like many Americans, it is always easier to not vote than to go out and do it. Another common thought is, “Well it doesn’t matter if I vote or not one vote isn’t going to make a difference.” Which is technically true one vote isn’t going to make a difference but, if all of the eligible voters who think this exact thing vote, then they would make a huge difference.

I never was into politics. It never found it interesting so I just wouldn’t participate or care to educate myself on it. My mom wouldn’t let me watch the news until I was in High School because she wanted to protect me from the “bad stuff” that was real life.

WIFFLEBALL

The toy and backyard sport WiffleBall is a new one the scene.

I played a lot of baseball in my life and I had one of those skinny, yellow plastic wiffleball bats and the ball with the holes in it. I used to love wiffleball. I was infatuated with the crazy pitches you could throw and if you scuff it up enough it could curve up to 10 feet.

A while back when I was really into wiffleball I was on the Youtubes and found this wiffleball tournament. It was a tournament that included teams from all over the U.S. and the teams were made up of usually grown men throwing this plastic ball 60 mph and curving it several feet across the plate.

I just think it is a really cool sport that I wish I got into more and I thought those dudes playing plastic baseball in the middle-aged bodies were pretty fun to watch.

Woodworking

Recently, I have been trying to find new hobbies and with quarantine and all, I looked into one in particular. Woodworking.

One of my good friends knows carpentry and woodworking and tells me all about it. He talks about the different types of wood, the tools he uses, and what he is working on. He recently moved into a new house and wanted to use his skills to upgrade the house and lower the cost so he told me about how he is going to build all new cabinets and tables and chairs and it got me thinking about how useful a skill like that is.

Being able to make something out of nothing seems so practical to me and so useful. Let’s say I wanted a new coffee table for my apartment. I go to the hardware store buy a coupe 2x4s and cut a few pieces up screw them together and “VOILA” a new table. Costs half the price and only took twice the time and it looks how I wanted it to.

I just think it’s really handy in life to have a handyman or practical skill such as woodworking and I look forward to getting into it more!

Why I chose my major

As you may know, if you read my “About Me” page, that I am a robotics major. Now I got interested in robotics when I first started getting more into video games.

I grew up with a Gameboy, then the DS, and onto a Wii and a PSP. I never had an Xbox or a PlayStation because my parents, “didn’t like all the shooting games”. So I had to take another route.

It was the summer going into high school and I found twitch which is a streaming service for mainly video games. I found that you had to have a computer to stream the games they were playing like Minecraft and World of Warcraft.

I got really interested in it and all of my freshman year in my free time I would be researching how to build a PC and what parts are the best. As a high school freshman I didn’t have any money, so the next summer I got my first job and worked all summer just to buy this computer.

Ever since I built my first computer I have been really interested in electronics and all the constant advancements in the world of technology.

Why did YOU choose YOUR major?
